Molding
New Beginnings with the Right Molding

Redecorating with molding gives you a chance to create new warmth and beauty in the home you originally fell in love with. To use molding with confidence, you’ll want to make design choices appropriate to your space and decor.
In some contemporary homes, for example, elaborate molding could be out of place. But don’t underestimate the amount of molding that rooms can tastefully accommodate. We offer a variety of beautiful moldings designed for contemporary homes. Clean lines, vivid profiles, and modern durable materials make our moldings a perfect fit for contemporary environment. The architectural style of your home and your personal taste will a play large parts in selecting moldings. But there are other considerations that should guide your molding purchasing decision.
First of all, the size and scale of the molding should be appropriate for the room. Low ceilings (8 feet or less) have a harder time supporting large ornate crown moldings than 10- or 12- foot ceilings. The scale of the molding relates to its profile as well as molding size. For low ceilings we recommend choosing crown molding which projects on the ceiling more then it comes down on the wall. Application of such crown molding visually will make ceilings appear higher.
A small room can be easily overwhelmed by large, elaborate molding, just as a plane slender molding disappears in a large room. Deep and heavy molding detailing creates vivid shadows and has a greater visual presence than subtle molding profiles. As you consider adding a crown moldings in combination with other molding types, you might be concern that extensive trim-work will make small rooms appear even smaller. In fact, the opposite occurs. Through magic of geometric illusion, trim-work often makes room appear larger and wider. Long horizontal lines created with moldings can make you perceive that a room is longer and wider than it really is. In a same manner, long vertical lines created with moldings will make a low ceiling appear higher.

This article was very helpful. I was having a hard time choosing a molding! There are so many choices and possibilities that it was difficult, but now I know how to narrow my options down. Thank you!

I love the fact that you offer so much molding on your website. Old world, Contemporary, Classic. It gives so much room for whatever we want. With that said, I never knew that with lower ceilings you were supposed to get moldings that are primarily on the ceiling as opposed to the wall! Go figure, it makes perfect sense!

I really the look that the molding in the picture has created… I think I may need to copy it. lol. It has given me some ideas, that’s for sure! Thank you.

I love the look of the contemporary molding. It adds such a bold statement to the room. Now that I have mine put up, I can’t even imagine not having it. EVERYroom should have molding, it adds such personality which you would not get otherwise! Its pricy up front but most definately worth it in the long run!

I really like the new art deco styles, however our home has a country feel to it so I can’t really implement those styles into it, can I? We have chosen to go the more ornate and decorative look, which looks nice too. It is definitely easy to find the right molding from this website - there are so many options available.

I absolutely love the art deco feel that the contemporary molding brings into the room. It’s just so.. awesome! It makes the room feel more sophisticated and hip. Great ideas in this article too!

I am so glad that someone has finally said something about heights of ceilings and heights of molding. I have been driving myself crazy wondering if I’m picking the right molding or nto. Now I know that I was completely off and I should choose something shorter. Thank you!

Moldings are great for the presentation of the room because it creates a sort of a frame– you wouldnt show a painting with no frame– why let anyone see a room with no molding?
- Joanne, November 12th, 2008 at 1:46 am
I know what you mean, Leslie. I’ve been having a hard time with it too. I’m so glad I went surfing on the internet and I found this place to help me. And the styles of molding they have to choose from is fantastic!
- Cadee, November 12th, 2008 at 10:29 am
I think Joanne and my wife have the same brain, because that’s pretty much what she told me when we moved into our new house. And she insisted about crown molding and other moldings as well. I never grew up with any of it, but I guess she did. Come to think of it, her parents house has molding. Well, now I do too.. and it really does make a huge difference.

Yeah, molding certainly adds a nice flair to the whole room. It is like the icing on the cake.
- Allen, November 17th, 2008 at 5:55 pm
I agree, I love molding.. You dont really notice that a room is that bare until you actually add molding to it. It adds so much personality and it makes it alot easier to decorate a room! I just added crown molding and panel molding to my living room. I love the panel molding because you can get away with not having any painting or pictures on the wall because there is already so much detail! LOVE IT
- Brenda, November 19th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
I know what you mean Brenda! I am a contractor and more and more customers are looking to add panel molding! You should try painting the wall UNDER the molding one color, then paint ABOVE the wall white or cream. It tooks amazing, believe me!
- Chris, November 19th, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Yeah, I can see where you are coming from. We have a nice decorative chair rail in our house, but we have put up some nice black and white pictures in some really nice frames to offset the bare walls. It looks great and it really makes our house look that much luxurious. We love it.

I was having a hard time choosing the right molding for me. I’m glad that this was here to steer me in the right direction. There are so many options and I was beginning to feel overwhelmed. Especially since I don’t really know that much about molding and I had no idea where to start. This has definitely helped me. Thanks!

We have outdone ourselves with molding in our house. My wife insisted on crown molding, chair rail molding and to top it all off, we even have some panel molding on the walls. I thought it would look so busy, but after putting it up, it really flows well together. I guess my wife really has a knack for this kind of thing. I really recommend it to anyone who is thinking about doing something to their home.
- Martin, December 2nd, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Martin - your wife sounds a lot like mine. I wasn’t so sure about all of this molding nonsense. But after it was installed (mostly by me, mind you) I must admit it looks great. My wife proved that she was right - again. Man, I hate that! (Although if I had been right we would be stuck with an either bigger mess, wouldn’t I?)
- Joe, December 4th, 2008 at 11:59 am
It is so hard to choose a style of molding that I would like.. art deco? ornate? simple? SO many choices. I don’t even know where to start..
- Maureen, December 9th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
I really like the new contemporary look. I’m looking to replace the ornate stuff that is already up and I’m really excited to see what I can do. There are so many possibilities and it would be great to really redo my home.
- Aaron, December 15th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
We have recently decided to go with a contemporary type of molding that also provides indirect lighting. It looks fantastic. We also just bought some baseboard that should go well with it. We’re waiting for its arrival so we can start the next step towards our remodeling project. We’re so please with the crown molding, and it will be exciting to see it finished with baseboard as well!

I love the contemporary items that you have on your website. Its so user friendly to see all over the contemporary molding grouped together on the website also. I cant tell you how many websites are out there that just put all their moldings in the same pages instead of simplifying everything. Props props

My wife and I have a classic home, so we have chosen some more traditional route. My house now looks so luxurious that I’m afraid of touching anything - like in a museum. I’m kidding of course, but it really does look great.
- Rudy, December 23rd, 2008 at 2:23 pm
I have always thought the traditional look was my thing. But lately I’ve been drawn to a more contemporary look. I think the moldings available are incredibly beautiful. Now I just have to choose what I like. Does anyone know if there are samples that I can look at?
- Martha, December 24th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
I am a big fan of an eclectic home. What I love about my rooms is that I have been able to take contemporary with the classical. I am a big fan of having the main part of the room be very sleek and modern and having the accents such as the molding be very ornate. Also, using colors contracted with black and white. So much beauty can come from not making specific decisions, but just letting multiple things to which you are drawn to into your space and into your life. not only will it make your room beautiful, it would also make you feel great due to what you like being around you.
- Linda, December 29th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
I have found that molding definitely makes a difference, and it can be hard choosing the right molding for the right room. I’m not really that big into some of the contemporary moldings, but the other more classic crown moldings are so lovely and beautiful. I think that I would have to say that some of the cove moldings are my favorites. Getting rid of those boring old corners and putting up some curved ones are so beautiful.
- Gracie, December 30th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
In the last paragraph of the article above, I could not help but agree. I made a large mistake of buying the wrong sized molding for my room, and we did not even really notice how short the room looked afterwards until after we had put up the molding. It was a costly mistake. I found out later that samples were available. I wish I had even thought of that before I purchased. but now the molding that I have installed now looks much nicer and I must say it was still worth all of it!

We move around a lot. Probably about once every year or two. My wife gets excited when we move into a new home. It’s really her “thing” to decorate a new space. Of course she likes to start off with molding and paint and goes all out. It makes moving worth it for her I guess since we can at least build it up to a higher value. Why not? She gets the feel of the house and then she decides what she wants to do in terms of style. It’s a good thing we found this website. We’ve used it for the past two houses and she’ll most likely use this site again for this new house we’re going to be moving into next month. It’s like a new beginning every time.
